We can't have it both ways - people complain that we can't replace Jerry, we have to accept that Jerry is gone and there are no Jerry substitutes, etc. ... but then we can't complain that people are listening to Furthur and aren't listening to Jerry so much.

I think it's generational, which is full of irony. Many over 40ish never will listen to a substitute, except live. But, since we as a forum seem to skew in that demo, we don't get the 'kids' having a similar experience w/ the subs as we did w/ the boys. If someone states they are more DSO than GD, God Bless. Most of us have been blissfully ruined by whole milk of GD, not the 2% or fat free subs. Hopefully some will dig deeper so someone will be on the board (hologram?) in 2025.

Here's a great idea: Someone create a Star Trek TNG holodeck GD program.

If we could re-create a full experience such as that, would people interact w/ each other or live in their perfect world?

That's pretty tasty candy that you describe. I already have a list of shows and some fantasy shows too.

I'm not complaining, in fact I'd gladly go see Furthur and DSO but to me I just don't get listening to that over the real thing. Jerry's Dead you can't see him play anymore but listening on CD? Whatever I just don't get it

Well, I've said in the past I wouldn't listen to Furthur over GD, but in fact I have done so a number of times. Their show on the 16th is really good, I've listened once and may well listen all the way through again.

There's absolutely no doubt what any of us would choose if we were told, right now, You can go see Furthur live over here, and over there, guess what, Jerry Garcia has been reincarnated/resurrected (or we have invented time travel), and the Grateful Dead will be performing live right over there, just the way you remember them. But we don't have that choice. I'm still very excited to see Bob and Phil live. It isn't the same - but then again, if Jerry were alive, it wouldn't be the same then either! We tend to forget that if he'd lived, he would have aged just like bob and Phil and he too would probably be putting in eye drops during the China/Rider transition. Or worse - probably far worse. Remember the survivors are the healthy ones ...

Of course, at the moment I'm listening to this:
http://www.archive.org/details/gd74-07-19.sbd.symons.12381.sbeok.shnf

(Let it Grow)

and thinking, Christ, there's never been anything like this before or since ...

There are other current live acts well more deserving of my time and money. I cannot go to any of these post-Jerry shows and thoroughly enjoy myself because the void is too big. My ears/mind/heart are straining to hear what is not there. If that is my character flaw, so be it. I've had more than my share of Bob talking cowboy songs. Next!

Hopefully they will let you in with several waters. Or maybe strategically placed upon you. You (plural use) used to sneak in pot, now it's water. What song(s) do you want to hear?

Deb is seeing them the prior night in CT.

btw- Totally off tangent, but they shut down the Rocky Hill ferry for no rational reason. It was the oldest continually used ferry in the US. We use it. And they are closing the Arrigoni Bridge because it is unsafe for use. Imagine Rt. 9 at the lights in Middletown @ rush hour? Wow. Big Time.

To cross the river you have Hartford, East Haddam or Old Saybrook, south of Hartford. (The Chester ferry is gone.) Officials are talking about a 5 year timetable to replace the Arrigoni. More excellent governance by our home state.

Oh, as to what I'd like to hear, Mountain Song is very high on my list. And seriously I'm so happy when they "let Phil sing," that is one thing you can't deny is great about Furthur! They let Phil sing! Is it actually possible his singing has improved? I think so.

The Cumberland from the 16th was excellent.

I'm on a Birdsong kick at the moment, so I guess a Birdsong would be nice. And last year, Blues for Allah was superb, wouldn't mind hearing that again.

I really love how they do Brown Eyed Women:

John Sings the verses and the chorus, except Phil sings "and the old man is getting on".

You are really going to love the stage backdrop screen this time around. Smuggle in a camcorder if you can.

This is a rather crappy recording of Jones Beach the other night. The wind was whipping, and there were far fewer tapers than the night before up in Bethel. The Jam>Dark Star were unbelievably insane in person.

(despite the time on the embedded player, the DS clocks in at about 21 min.)

Honestly it's Bob I'm worried about :) my husband and son find the eye drops story extremely funny, too. I'm actually starting to think maybe they should cancel or postpone - I will seriously be a little worried if it is as hot as they say it will be (supposed to be 100 degrees here Thurs. and Fri., and not much better Sat.). It doesn't sound like much fun and I would hate to be at the show where Bob or Phil has a heat stroke.

I don't know about this ferry. When I lived in Middletown it was a sleepy place.

What I'm worried about at the Mann is having only one port-a-john again this year outside in the parking area, like they had last year.

I'm not ashamed to admit I pooped in a bag in the back of my minivan last year at the Mann. You gotta do what you gotta do!

Yes, quite frankly that has crossed my mind as well. Is it not pathetic that we both remember THAT PARTICULAR PORTAJOHN a year later!! and last year was not particularly hot if I'm recalling correctly, it was warm but pleasant and the odor was still horrific. I very much hope they have thought this through a bit better this year.

Most venues now let you bring in one unopened bottle of water.

I'm surprised how many dogs got into the Bethel Woods show this past Saturday.

That sounds like a reasonable explanation. I wasn't so much disappointed as a little bit surprised. Anyway, I'm just generalizing here from my personal experience -- I'm sure there was lots of Jerry to be had.
